MD H2E Staff

Barbara Sattler, RN, DrPH, FAAN

Dr. Sattler is a Professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing where she directs the only graduate program in Environmental Health Nursing in the country which includes a Masters in Environmental Health Nursing, a Post-Masters Certificate in Environmental Health, and Doctoral studies. Dr. Sattler directs a number of grant-funded projects to enhance the capacity of nurses to address environmental health issues through education, practice, research, and advocacy/policy. She is the author of Environmental Health and Nursing, as well as a long list of journal articles and chapters in nursing texts. She serves on the US EPA’s Advisory Board for Children’s Health Protection and the Governor’s Commission on Environmental Justice. She has been a long-term and active member of the Health Care Without Harm campaign and Hospitals for a Healthy Environment, two initiatives that are dedicated to supporting environmental stewardship within the health care sector. She is a Registered Nurse, with a Doctorate in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health.

Joan Plisko, PhD

Joan Plisko is the Technical Director of Maryland Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (MD H2E). She provides technical assistance to hospitals statewide in developing and implementing environmental management programs. Areas of expertise include waste management, toxics reduction, as well as resource conservation and policy development. Prior to joining the MD H2E team, Joan provided environmental policy and information management services to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Joan received a Ph.D. in Environmental Systems Engineering from Clemson University an M.S. in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia and a B.S. in Commerce and Engineering from Drexel University.

Joan is an avid organic gardener and an active member of her community – she initiated the development of the Catonsville Residential Clean Energy Buying Group – the first of its kind in Maryland; was the founding Chair of the Baltimore County Advisory Commission on Environmental Quality; sits on the Board of Directors for the Maryland Recyclers Coalition, the Baltimore Medical System Green Building Committee; as well as the Committee of Principals for the Baltimore City/County Watershed Agreement.

Louise Mitchell, PT

Louise Mitchell is the Sustainable Foods Coordinator for Maryland Hospitals for a Healthy Environment. She works with the hospital Food Service Directors, Executive Chefs, and Purchasing Managers to educate them about the health risks of our current agricultural practices and assist them with locating sources of healthier, local, and sustainably produced foods and implementing sustainable practices at their facilities. Working with the Healthy Food in Health Care Campaign and the Food Work Group through Health Care Without Harm, Louise is part of a national team that is also educating the group purchasing organizations, food service contractors, food distributors and other vendors about the importance of providing healthier, sustainably produced foods to our healthcare facilities.

Louise has a diverse background working as a publicist to promote conferences and events for many non-profit organizations that promote nutrition, integrative and alternative medicine, sustainable farming practices, and environmental issues. She helped to start a farm in 2002 that continues to develop the expertise in re-mineralizing our soils and our food. She has been instrumental in mobilizing Baltimore area residents to pass recent legislation in Maryland to address global warming. Louise is also a physical therapist who has worked in several of the Baltimore hospitals throughout her career, integrating the use of complementary therapies and meditation practices with her patients, especially those with cancer, and facilitating the integration of these services into hospitals and health systems.

Denise Choiniere, RN, BSN

Denise has been a registered nurse for over 12 years. For the last 10 years, she has been working at the University of Maryland Medical Center in their cardiac intensive care unit. Denise was instrumental in initiating their alkaline battery recycling program and also instituted “Quiet Hour” in her unit.

She is now a full time graduate student, pursuing her masters and PhD in Environmental Health Nursing. Denise works part time for Maryland Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (MD H2E) and is the new Environmental Health Coordinator at UMMC. In her role as Environmental Health Coordinator, Denise has engaged over 50 nurses at UMMC to join their “greening” efforts and initiatives. Learn more about Denise at The Luminary Project.
