What is MD H2E?

Maryland Hospitals for a Healthy Environment is a technical assistance and networking initiative that promotes environmental sustainability in health care and is co-sponsored by national H2E, the Maryland Hospital Association, the Maryland Department of the Environment, the Maryland Nurses Association, the University of Maryland School of Nursing, and Health Care Without Harm.

How can my facility participate in MD H2E?

Health care facilities in MD can join the MD H2E effort as Partners by filling out a MD H2E Participant Commitment Form and returning it to Joan Plisko at plisko@son.maryland.edu or fax 410-706-0253. For further assistance, call 410-706-2107. To become a member of the larger Practice Greenhealth community, visit www.practicegreenhealth.org.

Joining MD H2E helps hospitals:

  • improve patient and employee health and safety by reducing occupational exposures
  • stay ahead of Maryland-specific environmental regulations and compliance issues
  • identify and implement environmental programs that have potential to improve the bottom line
  • receive public recognition for creating a healthier environment for patients, staff and the community

When you commit to participation in MD H2E, you are eligible for:

1. MD H2E Focus Group Meetings: Held every month or so, these meetings provide a forum for healthcare managers to share their successes and strategize around barriers to the implementation of specific environmental programs.

2. On-site or Hospital-specific Technical Assistance: MD H2E staff regularly visit Partner hospitals to assist with the development of Green Teams, environmental policies, recycling programs, environmentally preferable purchasing initiatives, waste assessments, on-site education and goal-setting.

3. Innovative Pilot Projects: MD H2E Partners are participating in a range of innovative pilot programs including integrated pest management, blue wrap recycling, and waste data tracking, to name a few. MD H2E uses the data and feedback from these pilot projects to refine program parameters and produce successful models to roll out to the rest of the Maryland healthcare community.

4. Trainings and Education: Several times a year, MD H2E holds large-scale trainings on topics chosen by its hospital partners. Past trainings have included Green Building, Universal Waste Management, Pharmaceutical Waste Management and Healthy Food in Healthcare.

5. Healthy Food in Healthcare Program: MD H2E is specifically funded by the US Department of Agriculture to help healthcare facilities across the state implement dietary/nutrition programs that include organic and locally grown fresh food, antibiotic-free meat and poultry and rBGH-free milk and dairy products, for starters.
