Join the Power of Three

You may already have heard the exciting news: We are launching a new nonprofit member based organization that combines and builds upon three powerful initiatives to improve the environmental performance of the health care sector. H2E is joining forces with the Green Guide for Health Care, the premier green building and operations tool for health care facilities; and the Healthcare Clean Energy Exchange, a program to reduce energy costs and health care’s carbon footprint. This new combined organization (yet to be named) will offer its members a full range of tools, resources, forums, technical assistance, and networking opportunities to engage the healthcare design, construction and operations sectors in creating safe, healthy healthcare environments.

The Power of Three

Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E) – a national, not-for-profit knowledge organization with 10 years experience providing tools and resources to support environmentally sustainable health care facilities.

Green Guide for Health Care (GGHC) – the first and only voluntary best practices toolkit for the design, construction and operation of health care facilities, offering a “one stop shop” for implementing healing design features, smart energy and water strategies, safer materials and responsible materials management.

Healthcare Clean Energy Exchange (HCEE) – a reverse auction program (currently in the pilot stage) to assist healthcare providers in lowering energy bills while increasing the percentage of clean energy in their energy procurement portfolio.

We are poised to launch in mid January 2008 – keep an eye out for details about the membership fees (and early-bird discounts), the new programs, the 2008 Environmental Excellence Awards and the exciting Webinar series. Membership fees will apply to take advantage of our full offerings. Be the first to get all the details! Contact Mark Tecca to get on our early-adopter email list and we’ll make sure you get all the information about the new organization as soon as it is ready. Here’s to a safe, healthy, and exciting New Year.

Environmental Excellence Awards 2008

The 2008 awards season is just around the corner. Award applications will be available January 2 and are due by February 29. Environmental Excellence Awards are a member benefit. More details about the new organization will be released soon and our new website will launch on January 22.

  • Partner Recognition – rewards facilities that have begun to work on environmental improvements and achieved some progress.
  • Making Medicine Mercury-Free – recognizes facilities that have virtually eliminated mercury from their facilities and have made a commitment to continue to be “mercury free.”
  • Partner for Change – recognizes facilities that continuously improve and expand upon their mercury elimination, waste reduction, and pollution prevention programs. At a minimum, facilities applying for this award should be recycling 10% of their solid waste, have begun mercury elimination programs with a plan in place for total elimination, and have developed other successful pollution prevention programs.
  • Champion for Change – recognizes organizations and agencies supplying products and services to healthcare facilities that demonstrate successful accomplishments in ‘greening’ their own organization and have assisted their associated healthcare facility clients/members/customers in improving their environmental performance.
  • System for Change – recognizes health systems that are working cohesively to gather data, set system goals, benchmark, and share successes in environmental performance. A minimum of 25% of system facilities must also apply for a Partner for Change award in order for the system to receive this award.

Save the date!

The Environmental Excellence Awards ceremony will be held in conjunction with CleanMed, May 20-22, 2008, in Pittsburgh, Penn. For more details on the event, visit CleanMed.org.
